Abstract |
Knowledge management in large organizations can be significantly improved by use of semantic technology, but demands that users collaborate, often indirectly and anonymously, by supplying high quality documents and metadata to the community. The success depends on appropriate incentives which make it attractive for individuals to cooperate in a fair and effective manner. We discuss the motives underlying cooperation, and the incentives which can be used to direct the behavior in large organizations in a desired direction. Rather than on material rewards, cooperative behavior depends on identification with the objectives of the organization, belief in the fair behavior of all cooperation partners, sanctions against unfair behavior (“free riding”), and the assumption that a very substantial indirect benefit will be obtained by the individual which provides effort for the common good of a community. Individual behavior can be directed by indirect rewards, often linked to career development, information feedback about own performance, and reputation systems which can assume widely different forms, adapted to the culture and formal rules of an organization. |
